The Trip Registration Process
Online registration will open at 6:00 p.m., April 15. Thanks to all of you who responded to our info request in the first info sheet and made lodging reservations. We had over 50 respondents! Several of those folks have since told me that they will not be able to make the trip, though.
We have room to accommodate 30 participants on the trip. Participants must be GSOC members or their guests. We will open registration to the general GSOC membership on April 15 at approximately 6 pm online on the GSOC website. If you want to make sure that you get a spot on the trip please make sure you register as soon as possible. You will be able to register parties of maximum 4 participants at a time.
If you do not make the cutoff, be sure to send Carol Hasenberg an email right away (csh727@comcast.net) and we will put you and your guest on the waiting list. Your name will appear on the list in the order that Carol receives the emails. It is likely that we will have some folks dropping out of participation over the next two months so if you're near the top of the list you may be able to go. We do hope that everyone who wants to go on the trip will be able to go.
If you are registered and must cancel your reservation, please do so on or before Friday, June 7, and we will give you a full refund. If you cancel after that, we will only be able to give you a refund if we can get a paid replacement for your slot.
Trip Overview and Policies
Trip dates: June 19-24, 2019

Who can participate: GSOC Members and their guests
Transportation: Participants are responsible for providing their own transportation. The field trip committee will designate a carpool coordinator to facilitate ridership to and from home and during the trip. National Forest Pass/Senior Pass will be needed for some of the parking areas.On days that we need to drive to sites we will carpool in an effort to minimize auto usage and ease parking at stops. If you are carpooling please be sure to help the drivers pay for gas.
Camping, Lodging, and Dining: Participants are to make their own arrangements, EXCEPT for dinner on Sunday evening, June 23. Sunday evening dinner will be a group activity paid by the trip participation fee. All other transportation, lodging and dining fees will be paid by the participants.
Participation is limited to 30 participants, who must be GSOC members or their guests. Priority registration by mail will be available to GSOC Board Members and GSOC Fellows between April 1 and April 15, provided their registration and payments are received by April 15. Registration will be open for remaining spots on April 15 on the GSOC website. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult GSOC member parent or legal guardian. Participants must also fill out and sign a liability waiver, available at the meeting place. Minor participants will need the signature of a parent/guardian on the liability waiver.
Cancellations and Waiting List: If you cancel your reservation on or before Friday, June 7, we will give you a full refund. If you cancel after that, we will only be able to give you a refund if we can get a paid replacement for your slot. We will take names for a waiting list as soon as registration closes.
Trip Fees: $200 per participant. Fees will include printed materials, guest leader fees, Sunday June 23 dinner and Wallowa Lake Tramway tickets.
Dr. Ellen Morris Bishop
Ellen Morris Bishop was born into a family of artists, and grew up wandering the glaciated Berkshire Hills of northwestern Connecticut. Geology, with its patterned stones and out-sized stories of glaciers, volcanoes and tholeiitic flood basalts enthralled her from an early age. She holds a PhD in geology from Oregon State University. Her research helped define the history of eastern Oregon’s exotic terranes; her books explain the Northwest’s geologic history to non-geologists. Bishop's photography reveals her artistic heritage and deep understanding of the Earth and its processes. She has taught at Whitman College and elsewhere, and presently lives and works as a photographer in Wallowa County, Oregon.
General Trip Itinerary
Wednesday, June 19: Participants will arrange their own transportation to the Enterprise/Joseph Area. All participants are to meet at 4-6 p.m. at the Eagle’s View Inn and Suites, 1200 Highland Avenue, Enterprise. All participants MUST sign a liability waiver to participate in the trip. Dr. Bishop will give a short overview of the geologic history of the area. The group may informally meet for dinner not provided by GSOC. Participants will lodge in the Enterprise/Joseph area by their own arrangements.
Thursday, June 20: Participants taking the hike will meet at the Hurricane Creek Trailhead with packed lunches. They will walk in 3 groups up the trail after a briefing by Dr. Bishop. Emphasis will be on the geology of the Wallowa Terrane and the Wallowa Batholith. After walking and viewing for approximately 3 miles, the entire group will eat lunch at a designated meeting spot. Return trip will be done in a similar manner. Alternative activities will be planned for participants who cannot manage such a long hike, including a trip to the Wallowa County Museum. Note: Packed lunches are the responsibility of each participant. A Safeway grocery store is located in Enterprise.
Friday, June 21: Participants will meet at a designated spot for carpooling. Carpools to caravan to Imnaha area and Zumwalt Prairie with Dr. Bishop. Emphasis will be on the geology of the Columbia River Basalt and the natural history of the Zumwalt Prairie. Stops to be listed in the field guide. Short hikes may be included at some of the stops. Wildflowers at Zumwalt Prairie should also be in full bloom. Note: We may not be able to purchase food enroute. Packed lunches are the responsibility of each participant.
Saturday, June 22: Participants will meet at a designated spot for carpooling. Carpools to caravan to Hells Canyon with Dr. Bishop. Emphasis will be on the displacement produced by the Wallowa Fault, and similarities and differences in the canyon stratigraphy to that of Hurricane Creek. Stops to be listed in the field guide. Short hikes may be included at some of the stops. Note: We may not be able to purchase food enroute. Packed lunches are the responsibility of each participant.
Sunday, June 23: Participants will meet at Wallowa Lake in a designated spot. Morning will be spent traveling to and viewing the glacial features of Wallowa Lake and nearby areas. Afternoon will be spent atop Mt. Howard via the Wallowa Lake Tramway. Tramway tickets will be included in the participation fee. Dinner will be a group dinner at the Wallowa Lake Lodge, and this will be included in the trip fees.
Monday, June 24: Participants will prepare to return to homes. Group will meet at the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center in Wallowa for a visit to the museum prior to heading home.
